FAMILY REUNIFICATION IN SWEDEN (2024-2025)

WHO CAN APPLY

  • Spouse/cohabitant/registered partner
  • Children under 18
  • Parents of unaccompanied minors granted asylum

CONDITIONS FOR THE SPONSOR

  • Have a permanent residence permit OR temporary permit with good prospects of permanent
  • Refugees: must apply within 3 months of getting status for exemption from maintenance requirement
  • Maintenance requirement: sufficient income to support yourself and family
  • Single adult: ~6 200 SEK/month after housing costs (adjusted annually)
  • + ~2 700 SEK per additional adult
  • + ~1 550 SEK per child
  • Adequate housing: at least 1 room per 2 people (kitchen not counted)

PROCEDURE

  1. Family member applies online at Migrationsverket.se
  2. Pay fee: 2 000 SEK per adult, 1 000 SEK per child
  3. Interview at Swedish embassy (DNA test may be requested)
  4. Processing time: 13-24 months (varies)

DOCUMENTS

  • Valid passport
  • Marriage/birth certificates
  • Proof of relationship (photos, communication records)
  • Sponsor's income documentation (last 3 months salary slips, employment contract)
  • Housing contract showing adequate space

IMPORTANT

  • The 3-month rule: refugees must apply within 3 months of asylum decision for exemptions
  • Oral Swedish test (grundläggande svenska) may be required for permit extension
  • New rules 2025: stricter income requirements being phased in
